Daytona Bike Week numbers down - still four deaths

Bike Week 2010 is over. So, too, are the lives of four bikers. The decadence and excitement that is Bike Week was on display in its purest form Saturday night on Main Street where loud bikes, loud music, loud people and loud lights were the order of the night.

Harley-Davidson mogul Bruce Rossmeyer may be missing at Bike Week, but his legacy persists at his empire of motorcycle dealerships, especially at his flagship location, Destination Daytona. Carrying on the Rossmeyer family businesses are several of his children, including Shelly Rossmeyer Pepe, who oversees management and operations and works at Destination Daytona, the motorcycle megalopolis off Interstate 95 and the crown jewel of the Rossmeyer empire.

Not too much excites me in motorcycles lately. It tends to be the same old softtail frame with a bunch of aftermarket parts slapped on and a great paint job. The game is changing. So it pleases me to see a bike with some unique twists that make it stand out from the crowd. Single sided swingarm, awesome wheels, beautiful foot controls and lots of black. Awesome. You can check out the Bastardo and Vendetta at their website as well as other projects in the works. Since they are located in Germany, most of us can’t just pop into their shop.

I took a trip to Daytona this weekend to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the 69th Daytona Bike Week. I have not been here since 2004 and a lot has changed. While much of it looked the same on the surface, you start to notice differences as you spend more time there. Since it has been 6 years since I last visited Daytona Bike Week, I thought I would share my experiences and photos and even a couple short videos of Main Street with you.
