$100K in fire damage to Everglades Boats manufacturing facility

A fire Sunday night at Everglades Boats in Edgewater was extinguished by nearly 50 firefighters from Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange and command staff from Ponce Inlet and South Daytona, but not before it caused $100,000 in damage.

A fire of undetermined case at a boat manufacturing facility Sunday night caused $100,000 in damages, said a spokeswoman for Edgewater Fire Services.

The 5:30 p.m. blaze was brought under control within an hour, but not before causing extensive damage, mostly from smoke and water from the sprinkler system in a 20,000 square-foot section of the complex five times that size at Everglades Boats, 544 Airport Park Road, just south of Park Avenue, said Jill Danigel, Edgewater's fire services spokeswoman.

The Fire Marshal was unable to determine the cause of the fire, but added it was not suspicious in nature, following an investigation Monday. There could have been a multitude of reasons for the fire to erupt such as chemicals at the facility, but Danigel said the fire marshal would not speculate.

Because of the thick smoke, it took quite some time to "locate the seed of the fire," Danigel said.

There were no reported injuries among the firefighters at the scene, she said.
