2011 Ford Mustang Specs 2009 LA Auto Show
Pony cars seem to make the biggest impression when equipped with snorting V8s, but the 2011 Mustang V6 that's scheduled to debut at the 2009 LA Auto Show proves a six-cylinder can still pack a potent wallop.
The Mustang's new aluminum 3.7 liter Duratec 24-valve V6 pumps out a healthy 305 horsepower and a respectable 280 ft-lbs of torque—considerably more than its 4.0 liter iron block predecessor. The dual overhead-cam mill uses low-friction components and a deep sump oil pan that enables 10,000 mile oil change intervals. The new V6 is also more efficient, delivering an estimated 19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway when paired up with the 6R60 automatic 6-speed transmission—a 25 percent improvement over the 2010 V6 model. The six-speed manual gearbox offers a more modest gain, staying at 18 mpg city and posting a three click gain on the highway, for 29 mpg.
Fuel economy is assisted by a new electric steering setup and the more flexible transmission, while tweaks like a new front fascia and modified underbody shields offer improved aerodynamics. The Mustang also gets the same so-called "Pull-Drift Compensation" and "Active Nibble Control" as the 2011 Ford Fiesta. Those features are aimed at counteracting crosswind and road crowing issues, and shimmies resulting from warped brake rotors or imbalanced wheels. Chassis dynamics also benefit from a limited-slip differential that comes standard on the V6 'Stang.
