501 kmh pass breaks barrier in Perth
St James drag racer Damien Harris stunned fans at Perth Motorplex on Saturday night when his Nitro Funny Car ran a 4.94sec. pass at 501kmh, the first time a Funny Car has run over the 500kmh barrier in Australia.
Harris's time was also enough to take the track record away from Ellenbrook's Mark Sheehan, who earlier in the night ran Western Australia's first 4sec. Funny Car pass with a 4.99sec. time.
“We got more aggressive with the clutch set up on the second run and I could really feel it pushing me in the back,” Harris said.
Nitro Funny Cars are brutal racing machines, producing about 7000 horsepower from their supercharged V8 engines.
Harris is very committed to his Funny Car racing and is now transporting the whole team to Queensland for a race event in just one week's time.
The event was also the fourth round of the state drag racing championship.
Oakford driver Rob Pilkington won in the Top Comp category, with his Funny Car defeating Mandurah racer Jeffrey Clarke's dragster.
Allen Puglia took out Super Comp over Jodi Racco, while Neil Anderson claimed an amazing fourth win in a row in Competition Bike, defeating Kevin Gummow.
The next event will see more nitro action when Top Fuel dragsters return to Perth Motorplex on January 8 and 9.
