Quote from the article:
| This was the second such killing in Arusha within a week. The city has seen a surge of crime after a brief lull in December following tightened police patrols prior to the Christmas and New Year festivals. On January 14 a bar tender identified only as Miss Edna,37, was shot dead at Ngarenaro area by gunmen who arrived at the bar on a motorcycle. The two motorcycle riders had entered the bar at 10:30pm posing as customers. But abruptly they drew firearms, ordering the lady at the counter to give them all the cash she had. As she hesitated, they shot her dead before disappearing into darkness in their motorcycle whose registration number is not known. Another suspect was gunned down by the police at Njiro area in Arusha municipality during an attempted robbery of a hardware shop. The deceased and his accomplice had arrived at the shop using a motorcycle. However, they could not use it to escape as it ran into a ditch before arrived and killed one of them. The RPC has confirmed the presence of motorcycle riding gangsters in Arusha who are linked to many recent robberies or attempted ones in the area. A fortnight ago a similar gang raided a bar at Kimandolu area on the Moshi road and ordered revellers to surrender all their valuables, including money and mobile phones. The victims included a senior journalist who had joined other customers at the famous joint in the early night hours to watch the Africa Cup of Nations finals on TV. "We were ordered to lie down and surrender everything," he said. Two of the gangsters were armed with pistols, he explained, but was not sure how many were outside the packed bar which had only one exit. He said the gangsters arrived at the scene on three motorcycles which they fled away with. "Police are working hard to track down the suspects. We are calling on wananchi to help identify them, as gangsters live in their neighbourhood," Mr Basilio said. |
