Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be first ever day night race

The finale of the 2009 Formula 1 season will be a day-night race for the first time in the history of the sport.

The Abu Dhabi Grad Prix on November 1st will begin under the dazzling glare of a UAE afternoon at 5pm, but will proceed as the sun sets over the Yas Marina Circuit, and finish under floodlights. The sun will set at around 5.45pm on the day of the race. "Staging Formula 1's first ever day/night race offers us the unique opportunity to demonstrate the circuit's inbuilt flexibility and state-of-the-art facilities. It has always been our intention to showcase to the world this spectacular venue and this decision allows just that opportunity," explained Richard Cregan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management, which runs the Yas Marina track. "It is the best of both worlds, spectators and television viewers will see the stunning architecture of the world's newest Formula 1 circuit during the afternoon sunlight and then experience what it is like under floodlights. We hope that everyone will be impressed by what they experience and see," Cregan added. The 5pm start time will also suit sponsors as European Formula 1 fans watching on television will see it begin later in the day, leading to a larger audience. UK viewers will see the race begin at 1pm on the Sunday, two hours later than if the race began at the traditional time of 3pm.

Yas Marina Circuit's uses a combination of towering outfield floodlights and shorter infield fixtures with highly sophisticated vertical controllable beams designed specifically to provide a consistent daylight effect as well as removing shadow and glare at driver level. The lights will be on from the start of the race to ensure a seamless transition from daylight to dark.
