Alpine develops blindspot safety system for lorries and coaches - Telegraph

A new device to help coach drivers to "see" round corners and peer into blindspots should deliver extra safety for other road users.

Developed by in-car entertainment specialist Alpine, the multi-camera technology offers the ability to monitor all aspects of the vehicle and its surroundig

At "blind" intersections, for instance at T-junctions, a front-mounted camera linked to a screen on the dashboard shows the view to the left and right as well as straight ahead.

For lane-changing, side cameras eliminate potentially lethal blindspots that are a major problem especially for left-hand-drive vehicles on UK roads.

Drivers of cars, particularly on motorways near Channel ports, frequently report the danger of being side-swiped by overseas lorries and coaches when they are in their blindspots.

A further innovation is a "Top View", with cameras providing a birds-eye view of all four corners, highlighting pedestrians or hazards not in the direct line of sight.

Alpine has suggested the technology will be available in about three years.
