Amazing Races to Thrill Fans at Yas Marina

To add to their growing stature, the Yas Marina Circuit announced to host major motorsport events in 2010 that promises unbelievable entertainment. “Yas Marina Circuit has been created to provide world-class entertainment to local people and international visitors and that’s exactly what these events will deliver,” said Richard Cregan, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit.
The most thrilling among the events is the V8 Supercars series, which kicks off the Yas Marina Circuit activities on February 19-20. The action packed series to be held during the night for the first time ever is expected to attract huge local crowd considering their popularity. They will also be the first to use an exciting feature of Yas Marina Circuit — a high speed off-camber left, right, left turn sequence — known as ‘the Corkscrew’, which drops 15 metres in elevation across 100 metres in distance — a feature that is sure to pose big challenges to the drivers
Four additional support races — Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, UAE GT Championship, and the Gulf Sport Radical Cup - will further add to the entertainment. “Having the first round of the 2010 V8 Supercars Australia Championship Series is great for Yas Marina Circuit. On top of that, to run this series’ first ever night race and use a special circuit configuration designed to emphasise the specific performance characteristics of these cars, will make these races unforgettable.”
“We look forward to welcoming the organisers, teams, drivers, sponsors and fans to the UAE for the YAS V8 400. When you add four regional support races, spectator access to the pit and paddock areas, plus all the family friendly entertainment that will be staged in our Oasis, this is a great opportunity to enjoy another great weekend of motorsport,” Cregan said.
The most amazing and delightful experience would be the International Drag Racing Festival, which will be held on March 19-20. The Festival will be strictly an invitation only event for the top drag race teams in the UAE. It will feature NHRA-type Top Fuel Dragsters, a first time in the UAE with a host of additional classes that consist of motorcycles, dragsters and other modified street-type vehicles. The racers will be competing for prize money of close to Dh375,000.
The FIA World GT1 Championship will be a feature event in April. The event will see internationally recognized champions of the world’s top sports car series. It is a new event for 2010 and six renowned sports car brands, making up 24 cars will be competing in this event.
The circuit will host the final race of the Formula One of the FIA World Championship — Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix taking place from November 12-14.
During the summer, the track would provide opportunity for automobile companies to come and test their cars in the searing heat. “A few companies have approached us and it would provide them the opportunity to test their cars in such hot and humid conditions. This will keep the track busy during the summer too.”
He also stressed that a lot of community activities would be initiated to encourage local involvement. “We have been doing a lot of community activities, like the UAE Walk for Diabetes and would further encourage everyone to be a part of such activities in the circuit,” Cregan said.
