Aston Martin Cygnet Available Only to Aston Owners - Glad I don't own one then

The winter issue of the Aston Martin magazine provides more information about the company’s small car, the Cygnet, which was announced last summer. The company released photos of the baby swan — right in time for the holidays.

The Cygnet is essentially a spiffed up Toyota iQ, down to the 97-horsepower 1.3-liter engine and continuously variable transmission. In theory, the Cygnet could reach 105 miles an hour, though not quite as rapidly as a Vantage.

The idea of a luxury city car is appropriate, said Ulrich Bez, chief executive of Aston Martin, now that environmental issues are “front of conscience,” as the magazine puts it in a very British phrase. “This concept is akin to an exclusive tender for a luxury yacht,” claims Mr. Bez.

The Cygnet wears the familiar Aston grille and bears the design cues of other pricier Astons. The rear lights are similar to those on the new Rapide, and the hood vents are very V-12 Vantage. The interior will no doubt be impressively fitted out with leather and other Astonesque luxury materials. It will be highly customizable, Mr. Bez said.

You can expect the price to be around £20,000 (about $35,000), and Aston is likely to limit sales to 2,000 units or so. There are no plans for a United States edition.

And there is a catch: you can’t buy a Cygnet unless you already own another Aston Martin model.
