ATV Smashes through ice, one dies

A 46-year-old Muskego man died Saturday night after his ATV broke through ice on Big Muskego Lake.

A 19-year-old man who was ice fishing jumped into the water and helped pull the man out, but he was pronounced dead at Froedtert Hospital, said Muskego Police Lt. Andrew Krause.

"It was very heroic, but very dangerous," Krause said.

Krause said the ATV driver had been about a half-mile from shore around 6:30 p.m. on the shallow lake when his vehicle went in. Another man on a separate ATV was with him but he did not go through the ice.

The ice fisherman used his cell phone to call 911. Muskego Police and Fire Departments responded.

"There is a lot of thin ice and areas of open water," Krause said. "It's very dangerous."

ATVs and other vehicles are known to drive onto the frozen lake, he said.

"It does happen with some regularity," he said. "A couple years ago a news van broke through the ice."

Krause said there is no indication that alcohol was involved. The accident is under investigation.
