Acura, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Nissan, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota April Sales reports (Update 3 added Suzuki, Nissan and Volkswagen)
Many more companies announced their April sales results. If you read these press releases, you would think the car market has made a significant rebound but there is always more to the story. Here is a summary of their reports:
Acura
Acura sales for April were 10,719 (a 21.6 percent increase) while year-to-date** sales were 38,512— up 16.7 percent compared to 2009 based on Daily Selling Rate*. Acura’s line of luxury SUVs continued to post impressive sales with a monthly gain of nearly 60 percent. The best-selling Acura for April was the MDX luxury SUV with 3,714 units sold, a 58.9 percent increase. The RDX crossover SUV sold 1,168 units, posting a sales gain of 57.8 percent.
Audi
After the best first quarter in the brand's history, Audi today maintained its 2010 momentum with record April sales in the U.S. For the month, sales of Audi cars and SUVs increased 32.9% compared to April 2009.
The April 2010 results were buoyed by record monthly sales for the Audi Q5 and the A5 Cabriolet, and they marked the second-best U.S. sales in any month for Audi. In April 2010, Audi sold 9,319 luxury cars and SUVs. This topped the previous record, set in 2007, of 8,106 vehicles sold. The best month for Audi in the U.S. was December 2006 when sales reached 11,897 vehicles.
Audi A3 sales jumped 144% from a year earlier. That gain was largely due to strong consumer demand for the A3 TDI model, which is the reigning 2010 Green Car of the Year. Another positive product story for Audi came from sales of the A6 luxury sedan which increased 105.2% over last April.
"Consumers of luxury goods are clearly buying again," said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. "As these buyers return to the car market they are seeking out cars representing substance, leading-edge engineering and sophisticated styling. Those priorities are the fundamental reason Audi has set record sales in three of the past four months."
BMW\Mini
The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported April sales of 21,111 vehicles, an increase of 9 percent from the 19,362 vehicles sold in the same month of 2009. Year to date, the BMW Group also reported a total sales volume of 76,162 vehicles, up 7.9 percent compared to 70,606 vehicles sold in the first four months of last year.
The BMW brand continued its positive results in April with good sales in the key volume segments of the premium market. In total, sales increased 10 percent to reach 17,268 vehicles. Year to date, sales increased 8.8 percent to 63,591 vehicles.
In the important midsize sports sedan segment, BMW maintained its leading position with sales of the 3 Series sedan up 63.7 percent to 5,464 units. After just one year in the market, the BMW 7 Series also kept its lead in the large luxury vehicle segment with sales up 96.3 percent to 1,555 units in April. With the 1 Series and Z4, BMW also continued its lead in two smaller volume segments of the premium market.
While the premium small car segment is lagging other segments, MINI continued to show a strong performance and increased its segment share. In April, 3,843 MINI's were sold, up 5.1 percent versus the 3,657 units reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 12,571 automobiles, an increase of 3.3 percent.
MINI's long term growth prospects continue to be strong due to macro economic developments in the U.S. To prepare for this future growth, MINI's product range will double from three to six models starting in 2011 and the dealer network is being expanded to 100 exclusive stores by summer of this year with dealers investing a combined $200 million this year and last.
Honda
American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted April sales of 113,697, an increase of 12.5 percent compared to April 2009 results of 101,029, the company announced today. American Honda year-to-date sales of 370,109 represent an increase of 12.6 percent based on the daily selling rate*.
Honda Division posted April sales of 102,978, an increase of 11.7 percent versus April 2009. Honda light-truck sales increased 38.1 percent for the month to 42,034. The CR-V crossover utility vehicle, up 36.8 percent; Odyssey minivan, up 11.8 percent; and Pilot sport utility vehicle, up 41.9 percent, accounted for the highest light-truck monthly sales with totals of 16,661, 10,628 and 9,322 units, respectively.
Acura Division April sales increased 21.6 percent to 10,719. The MDX luxury sport utility vehicle led the division with sales of 3,714, an increase of 58.9 percent.
*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for both April 2010 and 2009. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 100 days for 2010, versus 101 days for 2009. All percentages reflect DSR.
Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America today announced an all-time sales record for the month of April as early consumer response to the company's all-new Sonata and Tucson models shattered all expectations. Total sales through the first four months of 2010 also represent an all-time record for Hyundai.
In April, the company sold 44,023 vehicles, up 30 percent versus one year ago, marking the sixteenth consecutive month of year-over-year retail market share gains for Hyundai.
KIA
Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced April sales of 30,036 units sold, a 17.3-percent increase over the same period last year. Year-to-date sales are up 12.9-percent with the all-new Sorento CUV topping the list as Kia's best-selling vehicle, continuing its run of impressive sales results since arriving in dealerships in early January. As the brand's first vehicle to be assembled(1) in the U.S., the Sorento posted sales of 8,486 units. Other top-selling models include the recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick" Forte compact and the highly personalizable Soul, achieving 5,807 and 5,223 units sold, respectively.
Mazda
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported its seventh consecutive month of sales increases with April 2010 sales of 18,935, an increase of 17.3 percent versus April 2009.
MAZDA3 recorded its best April since 2005. Winner of ALG’s Residual Value Award for highest retained value after three years in service, the MAZDA3 reported increased sales of 27.6 percent with 9,320 units sold.
Mazda’s crossover SUVs – CX-9 and CX-7 – also posted strong April sales. CX-9 reported its best April sales ever with sales of 2,219 units, up 88.2 percent, while CX-7 sales jumped 79.2 percent with 2,237 units sold.
Rounding out the North American market, Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) had a very strong sales month with a 59.6 percent increase in sales compared to April 2009 with 8,152 units sold. Mazda Canada Inc. (MCI) reported 8,338 units sold, up 1.7 percent compared to last April.
Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today announced that it followed a 17.6 percent increase in March, with another sales increase in April.
Sales boosts for MMNA's North American-built cars (Galant, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder) and the Outlander crossover-SUV led April 2010 sales of 3,932, .3 % higher than April 2009.
"We are encouraged to put together two successful months consecutively," said MMNA President & CEO Shin Kurihara, "We are hopeful that the economic recovery will continue, because we are demonstrating that the Mitsubishi brand can provide what customers want."
Nissan
Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today reported April 2010 sales of 63,769 units versus 47,190 units a year earlier, an increase of 35.1 percent, compared with April 2009. Nissan Division sales rose 33.8 percent for the month, while sales of Infiniti vehicles were 46.2 percent higher than a year before.
Subaru
Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that sales for April 2010 were up 48-percent over April 2009 with 23,198 units sold. Sales for the 2010 Subaru Outback were more than double the previous year with a 133-percent increase, while the 2010 Subaru Legacy posted a 50-percent increase over April 2009. This also marks the best-ever April for the company. The previous April record was established in 2008 with 16,771 units sold. Year-to-date sales increased 41-percent with 80,692 units sold versus 57,181 units over the same period last year.
Suzuki
Kizashi and Equator sales increase for fourth consecutive month. Nothing else was said, rest of their sales appear down.
Toyota
Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. today reported April sales of 157,439 vehicles. With equal selling days in April 2009 and 2010, sales were up 24.4 percent over the year-ago month on a daily selling rate and unadjusted raw volume basis.
The Toyota Division posted April sales of 139,080 units, an increase of 23.8 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division reported April sales of 18,359 units, an increase of 29.3 percent over the year-ago month.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported April 2010 sales of 23,135 total units, for a 42% increase over April 2009, and its tenth consecutive month of sales growth. For the year-to-date, Volkswagen's sales have risen 39.4% versus the same timeframe in 2009.
The sporty Tiguan compact SUV posted its strongest month ever with 1,888 units sold, a 56.6% increase compared with April 2009.
Volkswagen's full line of award-winning TDI® Clean Diesel models, which includes the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, and Touareg, again led the way among customers. The exciting and economical Jetta SportWagen TDI continued its strong performance, accounting for 84.0% of all Jetta SportWagens sold in April.
Acura
