An internal report on the RCMP disciplinary process -- the first of its kind produced by the national police force -- reveals 56 cases of "formal" action in the 2008-09 fiscal year and another 231 cases where informal steps were taken to address violations of the Code of Conduct. While the bulk of formal sanctions were levelled against constables, there were also cases involving higher-ranking officers, including an inspector who was docked three days' pay for making "inappropriate remarks" to a co-worker, a corporal who lost a week's wages for driving while under the influence and a sergeant who forfeited eight days' pay for improper use of a government credit card. Another inspector was reprimanded and gave up a week's pay for abusing his police-officer status. While the Mountie misdeeds represent only a fraction of the force's 22,000 regular and civilian members, the RCMP says it takes all acts that potentially tarnish its reputation to heart. "To be an effective police force, the RCMP must maintain the respect and trust of the public it serves. To do this, the conduct of its members must be beyond reproach," media relations officer Sgt.
