Biker hits 180km/h in wild cop chase
A RENEGADE motorbike rider who led police on a high-speed pursuit in Darwin's rural area yesterday allegedly said he went as hard as he could to avoid charges.
The 18-year-old man reportedly reached speeds of up to 180km/h in 80km/h zones.
It is believed he was trying to avoid charges for his unregistered and uninsured 600cc motorcycle.
"When asked why he didn't stop, the man said 'My bike was unregistered. I tried to go as hard as I could. I tried to get away'," Territory Police Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer said.
The man, believed to be from Girraween, was allegedly travelling outbound on Girraween Rd when a police unit coming the other way clocked him about 70km/h above the speed limit.
Mr Farmer said the man failed to stop and ignored the police sirens when the police car turned around about 1.20pm. "He was doing 150km/h in a 80km/h zone," he said.
"So when he saw the police vehicle turning around he accelerated to 180km/h."
The pursuit allegedly continued further outbound on to Power Rd, Pioneer Drive and Kennedy Rd until the man suddenly slowed down on Arnhem Highway.
"He has overtaken a number of vehicles. The police vehicle was about 300m behind him," Mr Farmer said.
"He continued outbound for another 5km. He slowed right down and it looked like he tried to turn around.
"Police got out of the car and apprehended him."
The man will face court on December 31 for several charges, including driving in a dangerous manner, exceeding speed limits by over 45km/h, driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle and failing to obey police signals.
