BMW 1 Series Diesel Police Car Thanks to AC Schnitzer
You got to love it when cops get unconventional. OK, in this case it’s not exactly the cops, but German tuning firm AC Schnitzer that has given the BMW 1 Series diesel the once over, adding, as Jake Blues would put it, “… a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?”

OK, AC Schnitzer isn’t that cool, but they did work over an entry level Beemer pretty well.
Germany has had a long history of turning cars you wouldn’t think of into cop rides. We’ve seen pictures of Porsche 911s with lights and sirens, and Volkswagen Vanagons turned into police cruisers. So, in one sense, taking a car like BMW’s compact 123d, and using its factory standard twin turbo 2.0-liter four cylinder diesel cranking out 204 hp that can run mid-6 0-60 times and return 40 mpg mileage figures as a starting point probably won’t seem all that outlandish to your average German
But then AC Schnitzer got a hold of it and the performance got really tweaked. The stock engine now puts out 241 hp and 354 pound-feet of torque. Schnitzer also added a re-done front splitter, a rear spoiler, bigger wheels and, curiously, Hankook tires. They also lowered the BMW’s body by 30 mm, and added a normal German police light bar on the roof. Interior-wise, Schnitzer installed racing seats, slathered carbon fiber trim everywhere, and added a new cover for the iDrive knob that matches the wheels
The copped-up Beemer is part of the “TUNE IT! SAFE!” initiative being kicked off by the Association of German Car Tuners (or VDAT). VDAT even has a motto that sounds like something from a Devo album: “Only serious, safe tuning will bring the hoped-for driving pleasure!
On way or the other, the customization job done by Aachen-based BMW tuning specialist AC Schnitzer is impressive. Just count your blessings it’s a one off that will never see these shores.
