Boating Industry Group Asks Obama to ‘Clarify’ Negative Boat-Buying Remark
President Barack Obama has been called on by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) to clarify a remark he made Feb. 2 that it says linked buying a boat with irresponsible spending. What he said was "You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage." Frankly, you can replace boat with almost anything so I think we are being a bit oversensitive here. Then again, I doubt anyone is taking money saving advice from Obama.

Quote from the article:
During a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, during which he announced his Small Business Lending initiative, Obama upset the boating industry and the city of Las Vegas after making what some consider rather disparaging comments about buying boats and Las Vegas. “When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices. And it’s time your government did the same,” Obama said. Although Obama was immediately faced with a barrage of criticism from Nevada politicians for what they consider a negative remark about Las Vegas, he appears to have received little political heat from his remark about buying a boat. |
