BTCC - Jackson makes a little bit of history

Mat Jackson made a little piece of British Touring Car Championship history at Silverstone on Sunday where, for the second round in a row, he finished on the podium in all three races.

First, third and first place results followed third, second and first at Knockhill two weeks before. Since BTCC race days switched to a 'triple-header' format in 2004, several drivers have managed five consecutive podiums in a row in two events but never the full set of six. Until Jackson, that is…

His stunning set of results have leapfrogged him from a lowly 11th in the standings up to fifth and to within just 16 points of the fading Matt Neal in fourth. VX Racing’s former double champion Neal had led the championship for the opening four rounds of the season but some atrocious luck of late has seen him freefall outside of the top three.

But Jackson’s two wins (the first of which came after a daredevil move on Robert Collard, pictured above) and a third at Silverstone are not the best results achieved to date in a single race day this season. That honour currently lies with Fabrizio Giovanardi who took two firsts and a second at Snetterton in early August.

Dan Eaves, meanwhile, remains the only driver to have won all three races in a day, at Thruxton in 2005. The only way a driver could top that is to qualify on pole position and then win and set the fastest lap time in all three races (Eaves set one fastest race lap on his day of days)…

Furthermore, since the BTCC switched to its highly successful all-two litre engine formula in 1991, the longest run of consecutive podium results is held by Jackson’s current Racing Silverline team-mate Jason Plato who finished inside the top three a staggering 17 times in a row during his title-winning season of 2001.
