BTCC - Jackson win marks 100 for RML
Mat Jackson’s victory at Knockhill on Sunday marked a century of race wins across all the categories it has contested for the RML team that runs his Chevrolet Lacetti.
Team-mate Jason Plato had taken the Wellingborough-based squad to 99 when he trounced the opposition in race one in his Racing Silverline-sponsored Chevy.
In race three, Jackson took advantage of a clash ahead of him between Matt Neal and James Thompson to surge past for his second win of the season and RML’s glorious 100th.
Forty-seven of those wins have come in the British Touring Car Championship, starting in 1993 with David Leslie in the RML-fettled Ecurie Ecosse Vauxhall Cavalier.
In 1995, RML, now running the factory Vauxhall-entered Cavaliers, famously clinched the outright BTCC crown with driver John Cleland. A second outright title followed in 1999, this time when RML oversaw the factory Nissan Primeras of Laurent Aiello and Leslie although it was the French driver who ultimately triumphed.
RML also oversaw SEAT’s debut in the championship with its Toledo model in 2004 and there was instant success with Plato who was making a return to the series after two years out.
But that was a one-off for RML and not until this year did it come back to the BTCC, entering privately-run Lacettis that it had developed – with great success – on the world stage.
Outside the BTCC, RML has celebrated race wins in the World Touring Cars, World Sports Cars, Le Mans Series, Le Mans 24 Hours LMP2 and ASCAR.
