Buy one get one free? Dealers offer deals on Pontiac and Saturn

General Motors is offering big discounts on Saturn and Pontiac cars as those brands are being discontinued.
GM hopes the sale prices will help the company sell off the remaining inventory.

The idea is to get rid of the excess inventory so GM can focus on its remaining brands, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac.

This transition in the car industry can be good timing for those in the market to buy a new car. The end-of-year deals on cars are usually good, and on these soon-defunct lines, the deals are even better.

"We got excited about the rebate program and decided to check it out, because we were just starting to get the market a bit, and we're driving home a new car," Tom Fowles said.

Fowles came in to check out the deals on Saturns. This fall, General Motors announced Saturn would be discontinued. Now, GM is offering incentives to consumers and dealers to sell off the inventory of Saturns and Pontiacs.

"I thought it was a great deal, and it's really brought some traffic into the store," said Rick Leonowitz, Saturn of Libertyville.

General Motors is offering a $6500 rebate on Pontiacs and Saturn now through January 4th,or free financing.

GM is also offering $7000 dealer incentives that dealers can pass along to consumers, selling those cars as used cars.

At Castle Pontiac in Riverside, there are only a few Pontiacs left.

"This certainly has got the attention of a lot of people," said Joe Genna, general manager, Castle Buick GMC Pontiac.

Genna says consumers can make great deals because there's great motivation from the manufacturer and dealers to clear out the old lines.

"When you can buy a new car and get these types of rebates, up to $7000, that's a huge savings. Or zero percent financing up to 72 months, that's a great way to buy a car," Genna said.

The free financing being offered is for 72 months and there are a few other details in the fine print regarding the rebates, but those buying can get warrantees and continued service through existing GM service centers.
