Camaro a fitting ride for Oshawa’s mayor
John Gray, the mayor of Oshawa, Ont. seems to have ruffled a few feathers recently. Apparently, some find it problematic to see His Honour behind the wheel of a boss car.
The issue at hand: Mayor Gray’s official city vehicle is a smokin’ hot Chevrolet Camaro. And, oh yeah, it’s the high-power, 426-horsepower SS model. In Victory Red with bold white sports stripes. The kind of scream machine that makes the likes of Al Gore and David Suzuki feel faint.
Alas, the local critics (well, one guy, actually) are screaming mad about the mayor’s snazzy new wheels. “Our mayor is flaunting this gas-guzzling vehicle all around town,” complains constituent Bill Steele (who, I’ll wager, probably commutes in a grey-on-grey Toyota Yaris.) “Our taxes are the highest in the GTA by far, and I don’t like that I’m paying for part of a sports car that gets 17 miles to the gallon.”
There you have it: How dare the mayor drives a retro cool muscle car! How dare the sticker price tops $38,000! How dare the car isn’t a fuel-sipping hybrid!
Despite the howls of protest, the mayor isn’t turning in his Camaro’s keys any time soon. And Mayor Gray is indeed making the right call vis-a-vis keeping the retro-themed muscle car.
