Car rear ends horse-drawn buggy

Four members of a Canandaigua family were hospitalized today after a car crashed into a horse and buggy in Ontario County and ejected all four, Ontario County sheriff's deputies said.
Stephen M. Barra, 58, of 3559 County Route 18, Canandaigua, was heading east on Route 18 in Gorham when he crashed into the back of the buggy about 8:31 a.m. Barra told deputies that glare from the sun prevented him from noticing the buggy before it was too late.

The buggy was being operated by Louis Martin, 49, of 3886 Mumby Road, Canandaigua. Martin suffered back injuries in the crash. Mable Martin, 43, suffered a head injury and Judith Martin, 14, suffered head and back injuries. Both were flown by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.

Jessica Martin, 10, suffered "road-rash" type injuries. She and Louis Martin were taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Barra was not injured in the crash. His 2000 Ford Taurus suffered extensive front-end damage and the buggy was destroyed. The horse was injured and had to be put down by deputies. The road was closed for two hours, deputies said.

The investigation is continuing, deputies said.
