Chicago Boat Show - good deals and family fun

The Chicago Boat, RV and Outdoor Show starts on January 13 at McCormick Place North. This will be the 80th year for the show. It runs through January 17.

The Boat Show is one place where someone who is in the market for a boat in 2010 can look at all the makes, styles, and sizes. Here is the opportunity for boat buyers to compare apples to apples. But what's more imortant for prospective boat buyers is the money that can be saved.

Many boat and motor manufacturers offer special deals during the outdoor show season. Just for an example, someone who buys a fishing boat with an outboard motor may normally get a two or three year warranty on the motor. If the motor is purchased during the boat show season, usually until the end of March, the manufacturer will throw in an extra two or three years warranty at no extra cost. That could add up to thousands of dollars.

Boat dealerships take advantage of the large buying audience as well. Think about it. Will literally thousands of people walk into a marine dealership to check out the boats in the middle of January or February? How many people do you really think would go into a dealership in three to five days? But at an event like the Boat Show, thousands of people will walk by the dealerships display and special offers will be made to close the deal.

Quite often people will work out a deal on a price so that it fits the budget. But many boat buyers don't realize that there are additional items that must be purchased to get that boat on the water this spring.

Many people don't think about personal flotation devices required for every passenger. USCG safety equipment like flares, flags, etc. are also needed. A spare tire for the trailer, a trailer jack, boat cover, mooring line, anchor and line, first aid kit and a tool kit are just some of the items that you will have to buy.

Boat dealerships know that you will need these items and often at the boat shows, some will throw in some of these items to close the deal. Don't be afraid to ask for something if you feel you are real close to signing.

The Boat Show has a lot of things for the family besides looking at boats. This year they will have a Pirates of Colonial America display. There will also be an Antique and Classic boats for you to see. There will even be an Antique Fishing Tackle display. Here's your chance to bring that old lure and get an idea how much it's worth.

Looking for a fishing partner? Adopt-a-Dog Days will be Friday from 5pm to 9pm and Saturday from 12pm to 5pm. For more information visit www.animalcareleague.org.

And there is also the very popular DockDog Competition. You've seen these dogs on TV, run down a 40-foot dock and jump into a 40-foot long pool of water to compete in long jump, high jump and speed retrieve competitions.

On opening night the Fishing Line and Outdoor Radio Show will do a live broadcast at the Chicago Boat, RV and Outdoor Show. Jim DaRosa, Ray Ludkevicz and I will be broadcasting from 6:30pm to 7:30pm with some interesting guests from the Boat Show. Come to see and listen to our live broadcast. We'll have some free Fishing Line & Outdoor Radio T-Shirts to give away (quantities limited).

So visit us at the boat show on Wednesday night and enjoy the Chicago Boat, RV and Outdoor Show January 13 through January 17 at McCormick Place North.
