Clunkers filing deadline to stretch beyond Tuesday noon

The Transportation Department said it will again extend its final deadline for dealers to submit cash-for-clunkers rebate claims after reporting that its dealer Web site would remain down at least until Tuesday morning.

The original filing deadline was to be Monday at 8 p.m. EDT. That was postponed Monday afternoon until Tuesday at noon following a computer outage that has not yet ended after about 12 hours.

Transportation spokeswoman Jill Zuckman said tonight that the deadline would be extended a second time.

She didn't specify a particular time for the deadline, and said it depended on how long it would take the government to get the clunkers Web site up so that dealers could file claims.

The glitch, which the National Automobile Dealers Association reported began around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning, has made it nearly impossible for dealers to submit deals for reimbursement on what was slated to be the final day of the four-week program.

The Obama administration is continuing to try to address the Web site blockage, Zuckman said.

"The Web site will not be fully functional before tomorrow morning," she said in an e-mailed statement tonight.

The 8 p.m. deadline for consumers to make deals passed without being extended.
