The move came this morning after a consultant’s report showed Cobo’s current size is adequate for most of the events it could expect to attract. “Significant additions of space should not be a near term priority,” consultant John Kaatz said in a report to the Cobo authority. Kaatz’s company, Convention Sports and Leisure of Minneapolis, helped draft a strategic plan for Cobo. It emphasizes flexibility and efficiency before adding space. “Right now, you need to take care of the house before you expand the house,” said Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, which runs Cobo’s largest event, the North American International Auto Show. “But you don’t want to cut yourself short in the long-term. If we want to be that world-class destination, we have to have more space.” The next phase of expansion would add the space at the rear of Wayne Hall, near Joe Louis Arena at the south end of Cobo Center. Alberts said it would greatly improve efficiency of the center because that corner is basically dead space now. |
