Cop chasing suspects in Brooklyn struck by motorcycle
Officer Carlos Olmedo, 31, of the 62nd Precinct in Bensonhurst, was rushed to Lutheran Hospital where he underwent surgery for severe head injuries, officials said.
"Everyone here at Lutheran is providing excellent care, but nevertheless Officer Olmedo is in very grave condition," Mayor Bloomberg said Sunday morning after visiting the officer and his family at the hospital. "Let's just pray for him ... It's in God's hands now."
Quote from the article:
| The horrific crash occurred at the corner of 20th Ave. and 84th St. in Bensonhurst shortly after 1 a.m. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Olmedo and his partner, Officer Marlon Key, were chasing three suspects who bolted from a stolen 2008 Toyota Corolla when Olmedo was struck. "It's a reminder of the hazards and dangers of serving as a police officer," Kelly said. Three individuals detained shortly after the incident were being questioned at the 62nd Precinct stationhouse and charges were pending, he added. Witnesses reported the two cops ran into the road in pursuit of the suspects while yelling at them to stop. "I saw the motorcycle try to swerve to miss him, but he didn't have enough time and the cop was too close," said Ifeta Feratovic, 22, of Bensonhurst, who was on 20th Ave., as the drama unfolded. "The cop was then on the floor face-down. He wasn't moving, responding, nothing. The motorcyclist wasn't moving at first, but later on he was able to stand up." Bloomberg said the motorcyclist remained at the scene and was "both sober and licensed." |
