Countdown to Repco Rally Australia
Repco Rally Australia
WRC round 10 of 12
Thursday 3 September - Sunday 6 September
After a two year absence from the World Rally Championship, Rally Australia is set to burst back onto the calendar next week with an all-new event and one of the most keenly anticipated challenges of the season.
After 19 years based in the west coast city of Perth, Rally Australia's 20th edition has a new look and a fresh home - 4000km away in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales on the east coast.
Like Rally Poland, the reborn Rally Australia represents a giant leap into the unknown for teams and drivers - and a level playing field at a time when there's everything to play for in the drivers' and manufacturers' title battles.
The scenery, environment and road conditions on the east and west coasts of Australia are worlds apart, which makes it crucial for drivers to adapt quickly to the unfamiliar stages. For a start, there's none of the slippery, ball-bearing like gravel which the previous event was known for. Instead the action will be centred on the 'regular' gravel roads of the Tweed Valley region, tucked up in the north-east corner of New South Wales, two hours drive south of Brisbane.
Located in the caldera of an ancient volcano, the Tweed Coast is billed as one of Australia’s best kept secrets, featuring a stunning landscape, miles of unspoilt beaches and World Heritage listed rainforests.
The competitive stages - a varied combination of tight twisty and fast flowing gravel public roads - will all be based in the Tweed and Kyogle Shires with the furthest stage approximately two hours drive from the Service Park in the tourist centre of Kingscliff.
