Desperate car makers put up new car prices by a 33%!!!!
OUCH! just goes to show that us Brits just sit back and take these rises, when any other country will not. Ford was yesterday accused of using car scrappage scheme discounts as a smokescreen to sneak in massive price rises. An investigation found it is among a number of big makers charging up to a third more for new models. As 2010 plate registrations appeared in showrooms yesterday, the Ford Fiesta 1.25 60 Studio saw the biggest price increase of 32.6% over the past year, up £2,414 to £11,536.
What gets me is that these companies wanted huge handouts from many governments to sell cars while actually keeping and putting up the prices behind everyones backs, the excuse of a weak GBP has been banded about, but to me that does not wash, when there are fields in the UK full of newly built cars not sold, no profit in an unsold car.
I will predict as the Scrappage Scheme in the UK and Cash for Clunkers in the USA, did sell more cars in the past 18 months, it will be the next 18 months that will be telling as many buyers who bought under those schemes may not have really wanted a new car just yet, but the deal was good enough to persuade them to buy new. What will happen now is that the new buyers of cars will have already bought with the schemes, others will see these price increases and hold off, thus plunging the car market into a bit more turmoil.
