Drunk Cop Kills Mother of Two in Fort Worth
Fort Worth police say an officer who struck a car killing a mother of two had twice the legal blood alcohol limit.
Last week, Sonia Baker, 27, was driving to get her two young boys fast food when she crossed paths with Officer Jesus Cisneros. The Fort Worth officer was off-duty at the time of the accident. Test results revealed Cisneros alcohol level was .17, which is more than twice the legal limit.
Cisneros is on restricted duty, and the case is now considered an intoxication manslaughter investigation.
Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead said he will deal swiftly with Cisneros once all the facts are gathered.
"The police department is deeply saddened for the Baker family," he said. "We are embarrassed by this tragic incident."
Mayor Mike Moncrief also reacted to the news of the officer's intoxication results.
"Fort Worth is deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy," he said. "I ask the citizens of Fort Worth to keep the family and friends of Sonia Baker in their prayers. Words cannot describe our disappointment."
"I'm really outraged," said Stella Lopez, Baker's mother. "She didn't pass; he took her. He killed my daughter."
Police said Baker was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, which is a claim her family angrily denied, pointing out she worked in the medical field and wore her seatbelt religiously.
Drunk driving remains a major problem in North Texas.
In Tarrant County, 48 percent of deadly crashes involved a driver over the limit. In Denton County, that number was 44 percent and in Dallas County 38percent. In Collin County, one-third of deadly crashes involved drunk driving.
