Error leads callers to porn line, not tow line (No, I needed a TOW job!)
The newspaper had published a story on New Year's Eve about AAA's Tipsy Tow program and provided the toll-free number to call for a free tow and a ride home.
But AAA made an error in the phone number listed on the information sheet provided to local program participant Short's Wrecker Service.
The tow company in turn gave the flyer to the newspaper.
"It was a mistake on our side," said Dan Ronan, manager for corporate communications and community relations for AAA Texas and New Mexico. "It was a typographical error. We apologize if any AAA member or non-member called the number and reached an inappropriate message and did not get a free Tipsy Tow."
Roger Short, owner of Short's Wrecker Service, said his company has participated in the national and statewide Tipsy Tow program for the past 10 years. He said he was not aware that the toll-free number was incorrect until he was contacted by the Current-Argus.
He said the lack of calls in Carlsbad for a free tow home on New Year's Eve probably can be attributed to the wrong number. Under normal circumstances, AAA in various states provides the toll-free number where over-imbibers can call for a free tow. In turn, AAA calls a wrecker service in the caller's town to pick up the motorist and tow his or her vehicle home.
