Fastlane: Suzuki goes upmarket, and Audi goes driverless
Suzuki's first premium sedan will debut here by the second half of next year. The Kizashi, available as a 2.4-litre with continuously variable transmission, is expected to be priced around $100,000.
It will have a long list of luxury features, including xenon headlamps, cruise control, paddle shift, climate control, keyless access and ignition, and 18-inch wheels.
DRIVERLESS AUDI
Audi will be tackling America's infamous Pikes Peak Hill Climb with a driverless TTS.
The Autonomous Audi TTS Coupe quattro is the result of work underway at Volkswagen Group's Automotive Innovation Laboratory - a collaborative effort by the group's Electronics Research Laboratory and Stanford University USA.
Currently in the testing phase, it is being developed for several still-to-be determined real-world driving challenges next year, including a possible drive up the legendary 19.9km Pikes Peak in Colorado. This will not be a competition run, however, and is separate from the actual Hill Climb Championships being staged in June.
Dr Burkhard Huhnke, executive director of the Electronics Research Laboratory, says the technology found in the Autonomous Audi could help motorists respond more effectively to changing traffic conditions to reduce road congestion.
He also suggests the technology could return time to drivers by taking care of routine chores, such as locating a parking lot. The Autonomous TTS is currently controlled by a computer located in the boot but next year, Stanford algorithms will be running in the car using Java 'real time' receiving programming updates via telemetry with a range of 32km.
Ultimately, it is envisioned that aerial towers will be able to send and receive signals to these cars in a manner similar to mobile telephone aerials today.
MORE SEVEN-SPEED VWS FOR S'PORE
Volkswagen has upped the ante, by making seven-speed DSG transmission a standard feature in more of its cars. The latest models are the Jetta 1.6 Touran Sport. The efficient dual-clutch gearbox is now found in 10 Volkswagen models sold in Singapore. VW's seven-speed DSG is not only more fuel-efficient than the six-speed autobox used previously, it improves performance too.
