Ferrari 458 Italia - more pics and details
Ferrari has released more photographs of the 458 Italia – including the first of the car’s interior – in advance of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
The interior shots show that the main controls are all grouped on the steering wheel, with the secondary controls set in two satellite pods on either side of the dash and instrument displays on the panel ahead of the driver.
Ferrari says that this layout represents an important safety aspect, enabling the driver to concentrate fully on driving. We reckon Ferrari knows that its owners see themselves as F1 drivers who just never quite got the chance to prove that they were better that Schumi, so it’s given them an F1-style steering wheel to pretend with.
So all the steering column-mounted stalks have been removed, with the indicators, full beam, flash and windscreen wiper functions now activated by buttons on the steering wheel. The button to select the shock absorber setting is now positioned next to the starter button. Behind the wheel are a number of secondary functions, such as the stereo, while the gearbox paddles are now longer, to make shifts easier from any steering angle.
