Ferrari creates one-off P540 Superfast model
The second of these unique machines has just been revealed (the first being the SP1) at Ferrari's Fiorano track, the P540 Superfast Aperta having been built over a period of 14 months and based on a 599 Fiorano.
Ordered by American Edward Walson, son of John Walson, the inventor of cable TV, the P540 Superfast Aperta is a homage to a Ferrari built specifically to appear in the 1968 Fellini film, Toby Dammit. Walson had always dreamed of owning a car like that in the film, and approached Ferrari in 2008 to produce a modern interpretation of the gold-coloured car. "I had always dreamed of designing sports cars," Walson explains, "and when I saw this film the decision came of its own accord: one day I would have 'my' Ferrari."
The fully road legal machine required extensive work to create, not just because of its unique body, but also thanks to its open-topped design. The 611bhp, V12 engined 599 donor car's structure had to be strengthened to allow for the open roof, but by using carbon-fibre the additional strengthening has only added around 20kg in weight. Picking up his one-off machine, Walson said: "This is the most special Christmas present of my life.”
