Ford EVs to feature Microsoft technology
Ford will install Microsoft technology in five new electric and plug-in hybrid models set for Europe in the next three years, it was announced today. Starting with the Ford Focus Electric, all future electric vehicles from Ford will include Microsoft Hohm technology, making it the first automaker to use the service.
Ford plans to release a Ford Transit Electric this year, followed by the Ford Focus Electric in 2011, a plug-in hybrid and two next-generation hybrids in 2012. Ford claims the partnership with Microsoft was made to bring down the cost of owning an electric vehicle and make low-CO2 cars more viable in future.
Microsoft suggests owning an electric vehicle could double electric usage at home and increase the strain on the national grid, meaning it is important to reduce the costs involved in running an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Speaking at the New York Auto Show today, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, said: “As the market for electric vehicles expands, it will have a significant impact on home energy consumption and demand across the nation’s energy grid.
