Former high school track star and girlfriend struck by car driven by "model"
Daniel Kelley, 23, of Annadale, is in extremely critical condition at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after suffering severe head and chest trauma when he was hit by a black Honda Civic driven by 34-year-old Gypsy Porfirio of Brooklyn, between between Lipsett Avenue and Dole Street. Kelley's running companion, 18-year-old Gina Siclari of Eltingville, suffered a broken ankle, scrapes and bruises.
Ms. Porfiro suffered minor injuries. She was taken from the accident scene in handcuffs and will be charged with Driving Under the Influence, pending results of a drug tests, according to a police spokesperson.
Ms. Porfiro appeared dazed and lethargic when she spoke to police, sources said. She allegedly told them she had taken the painkiller Percocet and Xanax, which is prescribed to treat anxiety, before getting behind the wheel. Police found both drugs, as well the sleep-aid Ambien in her vehicle, sources said.
On her Facebook page, Ms.Porfirio lists herself as a model, and posted glamour shots on "Star Now," an online casting and audition service.
Kelley was a distance runner at the Huguenot high school, where he graduated in 2004. He currently teaches special education at PS 16 in Tompkinsville. Ms. Siclari graduated from St. Joseph's by-the-Sea last year, and currently attends St. Francis College in Brooklyn.
The accident was just a few hundred yards from their alma mater. Many running enthusiasts from the area cross Hylan from a trail nearby.
