Frankfurt 2009: BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics

Supercar looks, M3 performance and Mini economy: BMW describes the Vision Efficient Dynamics as 'its most innovative concept car ever'.

A plug-in range-extended hybrid powered by a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine and two electric motors, it is claimed to be capable of M3 performance, but with a fraction of that model's C02 emissions and far greater fuel economy. It offers a potential top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.

The 2+2 coupe concept has exo-skeletal style bodywork crafted and styled using aerodynamic knowledge gained by BMW in Formula One. Its drag co-efficient (denoting its aerodynamic performance) is 0.22, lower than any BMW road car, and having an aluminium chassis and polycarbonate glazing, it weighs just 1,395kg.

Power output is a total 356hp with 590lb-ft of torque, giving it supercar performance. However, it will return 75.1mpg and emit 99g/km of carbon dioxide; in hybrid mode alone CO2 emissions drop to 51g/km. Energy use is also minimised by an advanced onboard computer system which uses data from the active cruise control, stop/start system, rain sensors, sat nav and other sources to forecast driving conditions and calculate the most efficient use of energy in all the car's operations.

The Vision has a range of 31 miles when driving in electric-only mode. Aided by the three-cylinder diesel engine, this range extends to a total possible distance between fill-ups and charges of 431 miles. Using a conventional domestic power source at 220 volts would result in the vehicle being fully recharged after 2.5 hours; access to a slightly more powerful 380-volt source sees the charge time drop to 44 minutes.
