Frankfurt 2009: Fiat Punto Evo

The Punto Evo, on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is the latest evolution of Fiat's supermini.

New to the Punto range is Fiat's Multiair engine, a 1.4-litre unit with an advanced air inlet valve system which boosts efficiency and reduces emissions of carbon dioxide, particulates and nitrous oxides.

There are second-generation 1.3-litre Multijet diesels, and standard-fit stop-start technology in all versions meeting the Euro 5 emissions requirements. Methane- and LPG-compatible versions will be offered in some countries.

The Punto Evo gets seven airbags, including a driver's knee 'bag, and kit on offer includes hill-hold, cornering-beam front fog lights and stability control. Also new to the range is Fiat's Blue&Me Tom Tom portable sat nav unit with telephone connections and colour touch-screen, and an eco-drive function advising on optimum gear changes and accelerator use to save fuel.

An overhaul to the cabin brings new seats and a redesigned fascia, and there are new bumpers, new headlights and restyled rear taillights. The Punto is a little longer than its predecessor at just over 4m, but its other dimensions, including its wheelbase, remain the same.

Sales start in late October; UK pricing and specifications will be confirmed nearer to the launch.
