Friends and strangers are gathering this weekend to raise money and motorcycle awareness just days after a dump truck slammed into a group of bikers, killing four of them.

For most motorcycle riders, the open road is a sanctuary. "It's like the saying goes, 'If I have to explain it to you, forget it,'" motorcycle rider Jose Certa said outside the Road Runner bar in New River. The nine riders who were run over by a sanitation truck Thursday afternoon all understood. “True bikers, you know, they really instilled a sense of family among all of us," Certa said. Each Sunday the riders, who belong to the group M.C. Krzuers, treated the bar as their safe haven. "The day of the accident they did actually have lunch here at 11 o'clock and went out for their ride and were going to be heading back to the Road Runner and unfortunately they didn't make it back," bar owner Mark Starr said.
