Ever since 2002, when Jacobsen spent 50 hours in a studio recording every possible combination of words needed for directions, she has been more famous as "Australian Karen, the GPS Girl." Her voice is the most downloaded GPS voice ever, and it's an honor she wears proudly. Being the GPS Girl is definitely an example of taking the road less traveled, and it's certainly not something she could have imagined when she was growing up in Mackay, Queensland. Back then, she was focused in another direction: a singing career. "I've been writing songs since I was 7, but I've done lots of things in the entertainment industry," Jacobsen said. Although she has recorded seven albums of piano-based pop, a la Carole King and Olivia Newton-John, her music hasn't directed as much attention to her as her GPS gig has. But that could change today. Jacobsen has her first musical gig ever in New York, despite living there nine years. She will perform a concert with her three-piece band at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, and while she hasn't decided whether to actually read GPS directions on stage, she is happy to steer attention to herself anyway she can. |
