GM exec pushes for better incentives at 'Plugging In' conference. Translation; please buy the crappy overpriced Volt
The $7,500 federal tax credit available to consumers buying plug-in electric vehicles is helpful but a sweeter incentive could help convince more people to switch from gasoline-powered vehicles, a General Motors Co. executive said today.
Speaking at "The Business of Plugging In" conference, Jonathan Lauckner, vice president of global program management, said a larger incentive could spark more people to buy electric cars and help automakers build larger volumes.
"The costs are very high. The volumes are low," Lauckner said during a keynote discussion at MotorCity Casino. "We are competing against a technology, the internal combustion engine, that has been continuously developed and has a 100-year headstart."
