Good Cop: A letter to the undercover cop that followed me on Sunday

I like to balance out the “Bad Cop” stories here and noticed this link on Reddit posted from Digg where a professional officer acted correctly as opposed to the latest “Bad Cop” story. This story is great and how you expect an officer in this situation to act, assuming he is at least within a few IQ points of average. Check this out:

Quote from the article:
…you are absolutely awesome. Thank you. When my wife’s water broke at 6:55 that morning she was eight weeks early. As any first time mother (and father) would be, she was unsure of what was going on and extremely worried and scared about this early and unexpected event. When you saw me run that first stop light you sounded your siren chirps and I slowed. You pulled up next to me and I saw the anger in your face. You were about to bust my ass. I motioned a big rounded belly on my body the best that I could so you could see it, and pointed to my wife in the passenger seat. I saw it click on your face immediately. I’d like to think that at that split second you put it all together when you saw my strange gesture, the distress on mine and my wife’s face, the two empty car seats in the back, and the hospital a couple miles ahead. You then gave me a thumbs up and motioned furiously with your hands “Go, go, go!” I punched it and for those couple of miles I was going about 65 in a 35 and you stayed a tiny distance back at my caddy corner. My wife thought we were going to get pulled over during those siren chirps, and instead of being one of those stupid ass cops that pull people over in emergencies where tragic events unfold, you did the most awesome thing and gave us a police escort speeding down the road to the hospital. I didn’t have a chance to roll down my window when I made the right turn into the hospital, but I certainly waved, gave you a thumbs up, and tapped my brake lights. I hope you noticed it. If not, I hope that you’re a redditor and see this post. With your quick thinking and generosity, you overlooked my blatant disregard for the law and started the best day of our lives with a police escort. Most importantly, you calmed my wifes nerves during the most worrisome minutes of her life to date. We now have two beautiful babies, a son and a daughter, who are both doing great. Thanks for using your head, being a decent human being, and being a smart super trooper bad ass. Someday I’m going to tell my twins that mommy and daddy had a police escort like on the movies on the way to their birth. If you read this, PM me and I’ll buy you some beers. No joke. |
