Quote from the article:
| He reveled patrolling the streets of Miami and Sweetwater past midnight. ``He refused to work any other shift. He refused to go to a specialized unit,'' said friend and former Sweetwater police officer Marcos Villanueva. ``He was a patrolman. That was the way he had it, and nobody messed with him.'' After watching an episode of COPS as he prepared for his shift July 3, Parra suffered a heart attack. He was 59. Parra was born in Cuba in 1950, came to Miami as a boy and graduated from Coral Park Senior High. In 1974, he eagerly joined Miami police as one of the city's first Hispanic officers. Parra became a senior patrolman, a gruff officer with a big bushy mustache -- on the streets of Little Havana, people mistakenly called him ``The Mexican'' -- who exuded authority and called everyone ``kid,'' regardless of their age. Parra was buried with his flashlight. |
