'Grand Theft Auto 5' Not Likely To Launch In 2010

Even if Rockstar Games selects a city for "Grand Theft Auto 5," the game probably won't be ready in 2010. Publisher Take-Two Interactive doesn't see that as being a problem, however, saying that GTA as a franchise doesn't necessarily need to provide annual releases.

"We're certainly not saying we can't be profitable in a non-GTA year," Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick said duing an investor call yesterday, according to Kotaku. "We don't feel that GTA ought to be an annualized franchise."

Even if they wanted to, it would be hard to beat the number of GTA releases in 2009. In addition to putting out "Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars" for the DS and PSP, Take-Two managed to get out two downloadable expansions, "The Lost and Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony," for "GTA 4."

Zelnick emphasized a need to find "a balance between how long it takes to develop such an incredible title and meet consumer expectations and how long you need to make sure that an appetite has been both satisfied and whetted for the next franchise."

That's not necessarily a new strategy for GTA, which Zelnick said has been approached in such cycles in the past.

"That's something I think the company has historically done rather well and I think the high profitability and resiliency of the franchise reflects that," Zelnick. "I wouldn't see that changing."
