This week is their last full week on the job, the company said Tuesday, and the workers who are being let go were informed either last Friday or Monday. Also, causal workers have begun working at the local site to fill in for workers who are absent for either planned or unplanned reasons, said Michael DiMauro, local company spokesman. The use of casual workers is not linked to job reductions, he said. The reductions come as Harley pares down its York County workforce from about 1,950 union workers, when a new contract was ratified in December, to about 700 to 800 full-time, union production workers when restructuring is completed. The casual workforce, which Harley has said is expected to be between 200 and 300 workers, is a group of employees who work as needed to augment the full-time workers. Harley is also making significant cuts in its non-union, salaried workforce, although most of those reductions are not expected for several months. |
