Oddly enough this bill comes about because of a Troopers death, although the car in question could have run circles around the Troopers car without NOS. Why not ban all V8 engines, superchargers, turbos and high octane fuel? With all due respect to the family and friends of the Trooper, it is unlikely this will save anyone's life. It's too bad there was not something more meaningful you could have done in his memory. Feel free to look up NOS related deaths in Mississippi and let me know the count. Seeing this happen in
my neighborhood recently, there was a lot of outcry to pass legislation or create a rule to not allow high speed chases in these police cars that are not equipped. In this case, a Trooper chased a motorcycle at high speeds in a huge SUV putting other peoples lives at risk. Sure, the guy on the motorcycle deserves some punishment, but not for the Trooper who made a bad call to not stop the chase. It seems you could catch the license plate, find the car on traffic cameras, call for backup including helicopters and more. As the police officially said themselves "Police say that while nitrous oxide-enhanced cars are not a huge problem, the issue does crop up occasionally."
Quote from the article:
Trooper Steve Hood of the Tupelo area died last May in a high-speed chase involving a car that investigators said was enhanced with nitrous oxide.
Mississippi House and Senate members on Monday signed off on separate legislation that would outlaw the use of nitrous oxide in vehicles on public highways as Hood's widow, twin daughters and son watched from the balcony.
"At least this is something fulfilling to us, to see that this could help other officers," Lisa Hood said.
Hood, a 26-year veteran of Highway Patrol, died May 29 after his vehicle left the highway and hit a tree by Brice's Crossroads Military Park near the border of Lee and Prentiss counties.
