He checked his list, checked it twice - Angel has been naughty, not nice

A high-profile Hells Angel facing more than 50 drug and gang-related charges will remain in jail for Christmas despite support from the community and an impassioned plea from his family and friends for his release on bail.
Andre Watteel, 56, of Cambridge, has been in custody since Dec. 15, when he was arrested in a massive police sweep against members and associates of the Hells Angels, known as Project Manchester.

He was charged with 28 counts of cocaine trafficking, 27 counts of possession of the proceeds of crime, one count of possession under $5,000 and one count of drug trafficking on behalf of the Hells Angels, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in jail.

Justice of the peace Barbara Waugh yesterday denied his application for bail at the conclusion of a two-day hearing and remanded him in custody until his next court appearance by video on Jan. 5.

His wife of 30 years, Rita Watteel, broke down and cried in the witness box. She had offered to act as his surety in an impassioned plea for his release on bail.

With Watteel's older brother and a family friend, she offered to pledge close to $1 million worth of property to secure his release.

The justice of the peace was also shown a number of letters attesting to Watteel's good reputation as a businessman in Cambridge, where he owns several properties, and his reputation in community and charitable work.
