Without a doubt she's a looker. A quick stroll through our log books uncovers the kind of wide eyed, open mouthed, lip-licking praise reserved for megayachts or the sun kissed beauties that lie atop them.

"The styling of this car makes my knees go weak. Wide, low, long-nosed, short-decked sleekness. Perfection."

"Very elegant, sexy...a real looker. Better looking than any current roadster"

"This has to be the most charming, romantic car BMW offers today"

Two young female designers are responsible for the 2010 Z4's sexy new steez. Juliane Blasi shaped the skin, taking Chris Bangle's controversial flame surface treatment underwater, into the realm of sharks. At least that is how BMW describes the prominent new nose. Long strakes flow back along the hood, including a sweeping arc that gracefully carries all the way through to the not-so-subtly flared flanks. It's a lovely piece of work that manages to pay homage to Bangle's original design, while accentuating the Blasi's longer, leaner profile (though the 98.3 inch wheelbase carries over, the new Z4 is a full 5.8 inches longer overall). At the rear, is a deliciously broad, yet flat rump -- which houses the sole wart of the new Z4.

Normally, we are fans of hard top convertibles. We also admit that the Z4 is one of the best looking out there -- top up or down. Blasi and the engineering crew at BMW deserve a standing ovation for pulling off an elegant two-piece folding top that still manages to stow in back without a bustle (something only BMW has managed to accomplish with all its convertibles).

The problem is that this hardtop convertible obviates the need for a fixed roof Z4 coupe -- one of our favorite BMW designs in the last decade. Perhaps the M-division will see fit to reduce mass by implementing a real hardtop M roadster, but we can only dream.
