Toyota Could Face Second U.S. Fine - Update
U.S. auto safety regulators are reportedly considering a second fine against Toyota Motor Corp. (TM: News ) for not disclosing information about sticking accelerator pedals in 2.3 million vehicles, after proposing a record civil penalty of $16.375 million against the automaker last week.
According to media reports on Saturday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA has in a letter notifying Toyota of the initial fine, has warned that it it could pursue a second penalty depending on whether it decides the problems with sticking pedals are technically two separate defects, based on the manufacturing changes made by Toyota. The agency said that the ongoing recall announced by Toyota on January 21, may address only one defect.
