When an accident occurs and the rider and bike separate, a CO2 canister is triggered, inflating the bladders to provide air bag-style protection. "The goal is to protect the major organs and the neck and spinal cord," Barbosa said. Company President Stan Conley saw the air jacket, which had been developed in Asia, four years ago. Since then, he has worked to develop enhancements and upgrades -- and sizes -- for U.S. riders. The air bladders are designed to provide cushioning, support and protection for the chest, rib cage, back and neck areas. They inflate within half a second; they are triggered when a link in a lanyard running from the jacket or vest to the bike is pulled apart, such as when a rider is ejected in a collision.

Pricing is $595 which is reasonable considering a good quality leather jacket can easily cost $200 or more.
