Jack Pitney, BMW's North American Marketing Boss, Dead at 47

German car maker BMW says Jack Pitney, its vice president of North American marketing, died earlier today in an accident while on vacation at his farm. He was 47. The automaker released the statement this afternoon and said it had no further details about the accident.

Pitney was a rising star at BMW who joined the company in 1995 to run the corporate communications department. Later he was part of a small group of executives who pushed for BMW to bring the Mini Cooper to the U.S. He was Mini’s first U.S. general manager from 2001 to 2005 and the tiny car’s success helped propel his career. On Sept. 1, he was scheduled to become vice president for BMW’s eastern region.
