King top choice for next UAW chief
The script is set for Bob King to succeed Ron Gettelfinger and become the 10th president in the tumultuous history of the United Auto Workers, union sources told the Free Press on Friday.
The UAW's administrative caucus is to meet Wednesday at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency to vote on a proposed slate of leaders who would assume their posts in June at the union's quadrennial convention.
King has captured more support within the UAW's hierarchy than challenger Dennis Williams, a regional director from the Chicago area. Williams is to become secretary-treasurer, succeeding Elizabeth Bunn, who is to retire.
King, a skilled electrician and lawyer, is to take the union's mantle as the UAW's active membership has shrunk to about 430,000, or 70% smaller than its peak of 1.5 million in 1979.
"It is the toughest of times, but he has a strong background and a vision for the future," said Harley Shaiken, a longtime UAW watcher who teaches industrial relations at the University of California, Berkeley.
