Man kicked off plane jailed 30 days
A Toronto man who was kicked off an Air Canada flight to Germany on Wednesday night after getting into an altercation with a passenger has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
According to witnesses, Khodar Ahmad, 31, got into a fight with his seatmate — apparently over elbow room — on a flight from Toronto to Frankfurt and the plane was diverted to Montreal.
The flight crew called ahead and police were waiting when the plane landed at Trudeau International Airport, where Ahmad was removed from the plane. The flight then continued on to Frankfurt.
Angry at being kicked off the plane, Ahmad went to the Air Canada ticket counter where his lawyer said he insisted on being reimbursed for his ticket and put on either another flight, or even a bus, back to Toronto.
"The other passenger didn't want to press charges, but the man was arrested after he made a scene at the ticket counter in the airport. He wanted to be reimbursed," Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursière said.
"Like I said, he wasn't very happy. He made a scene," Lacoursière said. "He was asked to calm down by a police officer. It seemed that he didn't. He was arrested."
Ahmad spent the night in a Montreal detention centre and appeared in court on Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of disturbing the peace.
The judge told Ahmad he was the author of his own hardship and needed to understand that the type of behaviour he displayed won't be tolerated.
